” The idea is really about developing an integrated working process that involves three elements: sketchbook drawing from direct observation, photography, and painting in the studio.” Not being a slave to copying the photograph.

On 17th February 2024 PAS will be hosting a Saturday workshop with Richard Cross, a well respected Lancashire artist.
Richard will be showing how he works using a process that involves three elements: sketchbook drawing from direct observation, photography, and painting in the studio
During the day he will be helping you apply this process to your own work
You will be working on your own picture, from your own source material at the workshop but you will also be exploring an approach that you can use to help develop your own work over a longer period of time
Richard would like you to bring in a sketch and a photo of the same view to work from. It should ideally be of a local subject (a view out of your window or down your street, or a local urban or suburban scene), something you can revisit later to enable you to resolve and complete whatever they produce on the day
You will need basic sketching materials and paints. Ideally oil paint but you could work in acrylic if you don't have oils. You will be using a limited palette of earth colours with a pop of intense colour at end as a contrast. (further details about materials etc will be sent out nearer the date)
